Summer Service Project Internship
The
SSPI is an eight-week service-learning experience at roughly 200 agencies
and organizations throughout the Unites States. Students are provided the
opportunity to witness underserved populations first hand by working for
and with the clients and staff at each site. The program is sponsored by
the University of Notre Dame Alumni Clubs and the James F. Andrews Scholarship
Fund, administered through the Center for Social Concerns in an effort to
graduate students with a "disciplined sensibility to the poverty and
oppression that burden the lives of so many." (from the UND mission
statement) The SSPI is an academic, three credit course.
International Summer Service Program
Despite dramatic changes throughout the world, we continue to see a widening
economic disparity between the rich and the poor. The lack of basic resources,
access to health, education, and employment remains the challenge for developing
and non-industrialized nations. In nations marred by political conflict
and violence, efforts of peace, reconciliation, and democratization are slow
and its affects are seen most clearly in the lives of the poor. As we continue
to face these and other global concerns, the need to educate students about
their responsibility in our global community becomes ever apparent. The
International Summer Service- Learning Program (ISSLP) provides a chance
to examine causes of poverty and to create links of solidarity across borders.
This program
is built on the marvelous tradition of domestic and international summer service
projects developed by the Community of International Lay Apostolate (CILA)
and the Center for Social Concerns.
National Youth Service Program
NYSP is a sports and enrichment day camp serving youth ages 10-16 from economically
disadvantaged areas. The camp is held on the Notre Dame Campus and is administered
by the Center for Social Concerns. Over a period of five weeks more than
250 kids from the local community have
the opportunity to experience the rich Notre Dame tradition while learning the
fundamentals of basketball, golf, swimming, soccer, football and softball.
Each year NYSP hires undergraduate and graduate students to serve as team leaders
and swim instructors.
Hispanic Leadership Intern Program

the Americas. ACCION's network in 14 Latin American countries and seven U.S.
cities has loaned over $1.7 billion to more than one million clients in the
last six years. The interns provide business and technical knowledge to the
organizations and are provided the opportunity of bringing business concepts
learned in the classroom to life experience and people. The interns provide
classroom knowledge and technical experience to the ACCION offices while
they are given the opportunity to use the classroom concepts by working directly
with the clients and staff. They receive hands on experience in a micro-lending
organization.
